NP435 Magnum engine

Postby Nnanni0133 » Sun Jan 01, 2017 11:15 pm

Has anyone ever considered or put in an np435 behind a magnum engine? I've found multiple forum posts of people talking about it with some saying they have done it but as most posts do they end with jack shit. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible considering the LA and magnum are damn near the same block. Just figured I'd ask before throwing myself into this. Biggest reasons for it are because nv4500s aren't cheap or easy to get and the np435 is supposedly decently strong and easily rebuildable. Plus there seems to be plenty more options for transfer cases.

Seems to have been done so I'm going for it. Picked up a 5.9 to replace the 5.2 and tomorrow I'm picking up a np435 with a 208 out of a 1984 w250. Np208 will be useless to me but it's included. Then when I'm done setting up the 435 with a hydraulic clutch I'm going to pick up a north west fab black box eco kit. Then I'll have to find 2 np241s or a 241 and a ford tcase. Going for broke.

Not sure if I'll do anything with the 5.9 while it's out. Maybe a cam and top end gaskets.

I'm in the middle of the same swap myself. So far the only non-factory parts I have needed were for the hydraulic line between the cylinders. I used the russel fittings for an hose ends for a jeep. That was because I used a bell from a 90, and it has the slave on the passenger side. My biggest issue so far is the shifter wanting to occupy the same spot as the airbag module. If you need any suggestions for flywheel clutch or other parts, let me know. It's not really all that bad, especially for you since yours is already a manual. Mine was an auto, so i have a few wiring issues, and need to get the pcm burned for a stick application.

I couldn't find a later bellhousing so it seems I'll have to find a way to set it up or deal with the mechanical clutch which I'd rather not. My only concern at the moment is the new setup being shorter than the old one. It'll be the np435 then the black box then the np205. Only thing I don't have is the annulus gear out of the 241 or 231. Can't seem to get my hands on one and I'd really rather not tear apart my newly rebuilt 231. Still need the 5.9 flywheel and new clutch setup as well but that's just a trip to NAPA away.

Lengthwise, my 46re was only 3/8 of an inch longer, so if you can find an auto version of your truck, snag the drive shafts. I don't know what you have in mind on the mount, but I wound up cutting a slot through the front right above the bottom flange, putting a 14 inch wide piece of 3/8 plate through and butted it up to the rear of the cross member. A pic would be easier than trying to explain probably. I used the 1st gen rubber mounts and the original 81 transmission mounting plate off of the transmission. The angles and position seem about right that way. The only thing I haven't figured out now is how to mount the airbag module. It looks like I am just going to leave it out. If its not mounted just right, I am afraid the bags will go off from something stupid like a pothole.

I already removed the passenger airbag so maybe I'll just remove the drivers as well. I was just going to make a new crossmember all together. My rear crossmember is about shot so I was going to make a new one for that too. Maybe one for a rear 4 link in case I ever hit the lotto lol. Both driveshafts are brand new so I'd figure I'd just resize them. Keeping my fingers crossed that it's longer than my current driveline otherwise angles will be a problem.

If anyone here has used the black box and has a length that would be helpful. I need to shoot them an email at some point. Was going to just buy the thing now but I just spent a shit ton of money on motorcycle crap and the weather just went to the shitter so no point starting it now.
